Doris and I became friends when I joined our church choir. She was so welcoming, and as I had never been in a choir, her assistance was so helpful to me. So many good memories I have of our time together in choir.
In March 2015 our friendship deepened when our husbands, John and John, had knee replacements on the same day, same hospital, and by the same surgeon. We checked on the progress of each other’s spouse, and our husbands became friends as well. John Tomey had more health issues post op and eventually was admitted for rehab at the same nursing facility my mom resided in. Doris and I then spent more time together. She would check on mom and I would visit with John and Doris. In addition to her loving care for John, somehow she found time to do for others, as was her custom-- always a doer and giver. Last Christmas she knitted a beautiful red and white lap afghan for mom. It brought back memories of the Christmas year she knitted neck scarves for the choir members—I still have my red one. The next Christmas she brought in her delicious sausage meatballs for the choir.
I will miss you so much Doris, and I do know that you are in heaven, but here on earth, like so many others, my heart is broken…
Well done my child, your race is over
You have fought the fight
You have kept the faith
Enter into the Joy of the Lord
Well done my child, your crown is waiting
Here is your robe of white
Your mansion is just in sight
Come into the city of life
Well done my child.
To John, and to all of the family, we extend our deepest sympathy and prayers,
Gaye and John Dickey
